Products

We are often asked: How did you do that? What are you using? Here you will find the products that we use and endorse both in the Website build and design phase of our projects, and also in the production of the podcasts we produce. Many of the links here are affiliate links, which means we get a small commission in the event you purchase a recommended product using our links here. We appreciate your support in doing so!

Getting Started with Your Website (Your webspace, or “home on the web”)

Hosting:

First things first, you’re going to need a host for your website. While you can try and go the “free” way with blogger, wordpress.com, or any number of other services, be aware that when going this route, you are at the whim of the “free” provider, and ultimately you will probably outgrow it pretty quickly. That is why we prefer and recommend a self-hosted website. This option gives you, and ONLY you, absolute control over YOUR webspace and ultimately your brand and presence on the internet. Our preference is to use BlueHost services. They are reasonably priced, and offer a wide range of options within the cPanel. I have used go daddy in the past, and find that BlueHost provides better service in terms of website crashes, customer service, and ease of use/ nice user interface.

WordPress:

Each and every website I own, is built on wordpress.org framework. It is easily the number one blog/podcast/website framework in the world. Prior to starting my first site, I had never done anything on the internet except surf…let alone BUILD MY OWN WEBSITE! It truly is an easy to use system that gives you the ability to do literally ANYTHING. Best of all…it is 100% FREE. From the wordpress.org website: “WordPress is web software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog. We like to say that WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.”  We couldn’t agree more. Additionally, BlueHost mentioned above has a SUPER EASY one-click download in the cPanel for your convenience!

Themes:

Obviously, we prefer to use the wordpress framework for most sites. And when running wordpress, there are many, many different theme options to choose from when building your site. Currently ALL of our sites run THESIS. Practical Tactical and Music City Nation are running Thesis 1.8.5, while this site is running Thesis 2.1. We HIGHLY recommend this theme.

Website Build/ Configuration/ Design:

You probably thought this was where I was going to offer my consulting services, didn’t you? Well, that is not the case, I’m afraid. No. I’m going to send you to the guy who’s hours of video tutorials I watched. You see, as I said earlier, I am not a computer guru…I am in an totally unrelated business by trade. Like you, i searched and scoured the internet to figure out my way and make my sites the way I wanted them. But, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that I had A LOT of help along the way. And the BYOBWebsite crew is FANTASTIC…particularly when dealing with Thesis, and membership sites–but they do a great job in ALL website applications. Check them out!
